Chapter 12

Location: Fulcrum
Human Time: 6:25pm/ 1825 hours
Writer: The Examiner

The invasion of Fulcrum was an event that will never be forgotten by any of its citizens. At a time, they had once thought that because of the champions that they had there, nothing could stand in their way. They just didn’t count on other worldly forces to intervene in a constant cycle. Fulcrum is one of the strangest and most diverse worlds that I have ever laid eyes on. As the planet developed, so too did its knowledge on technology. Space travel was attempted on several occasions, but the inhabitants haven’t really explored beyond their own solar system. This was the day where they had decided to start.
Kingdom City was hit the hardest. The largest kingdoms on the planet were aware of each other's existence for some time. But after being fed up with constant failed invasions of their territory plotted by their enemies, they had finally agreed to join together under one root. By doing this, they set their enemies back, and combined their knowledge. You’d think forming an Oligarchy out of several Ecclesiastical Monarchies couldn’t possibly develop into anything good. But if there were only two things that the people of Fulcrum believed, it was peace and serenity.
After solidifying into a fully stable government, the people of the Mushroom Kingdom, Hyrule, and the others societies shared their knowledge, and built a city large enough to carry the planet’s most important people. The Koopa Empire, and the Gerudo Anarchy, as well as a few insurrections, and rebellions have never been able to penetrate the United Oligarchy ever since. Until now. It’s awfully ironic that a planet that represents peace can summon beings of total annihilation.
After the Kingdoms united, they had formed a legion of their greatest champions to serve as their ultimate protection force. The Wrecking Crew. Though it would soon evolve into what is now the Smash Brothers Legion, one of the multiverses most important defense forces. The Wrecking Crew began small. This idea was originally was conceived by Mushroom Kingdom’s champion. Mario.
The champion was out on one of the sentry towers, watching the sun as it slowly edged closer to the horizon. He wore his usual red shirt with Kevlar underneath, along with blue military overalls, brown plumber boots, and a red cap with his first initial on it. He began to contemplate how long he must fight. He began realizing that no matter what he did, no matter how hard he had tried, they always came back. They always did. But he reminded himself as to why he was fighting in the first place. He reminded himself that he will always have hope. He always did. Even if the whole world turned against him, he would never lose hope. Perhaps that’s all it could take to break a man as courageous as him.
Not long after, his brother in green had joined him. The champion spoke in an unmistakable Italian accent.

The Champion: Care to join me?

Luigi: No thanks, Mario. You look like you got things handled.

Mario: That’s right. *laughs* I forgot you’re afraid of heights too!

Luigi: No! Gravity and I just don’t get along!

Mario: Right.

Luigi: Hey. The star festival’s coming up soon. Maybe we could go to it if nothing’s going on.

Mario: Sure. It’ll be nice to get away from all the action.

Moments passed until the brother noticed.

Luigi: Look! Scout’s back.

The champion pulled out his binoculars to see who the scout was. It was a light blue tinted shelled Paratroopa Koopa with a skull cap wrapped around his head with a strap, and goggles surrounding his eyes.

Mario: It’s Parakarry.

Parakarry was never at first apart of the war on Fulcrum, but the war made his old job not possible. It’s a little hard to deliver letters in a war zone. His wings made him very helpful for scouting. At this time, he was returning from a rotation. However, something was off. He returned from his rotation a lot faster than usual. Normally, Parakarry just finds a small fleet of Bowser’s airships trying to take over, or nothingness. Judging by his body language when he was returning, he was afraid of whatever he saw.
The Koopa had landed onto the surface of the sentry tower with a loud thump. He then leaned over to take a breath. He inhaled deeply, and exhaled deeply. It sounded as if it was the first time he had breathed in his entire existence.

Mario: Karry! Calm down. What d’ya see?

Parakarry’s speech was interrupted by his suffocated breathing.

Parakarry: A. *Inhale* Fleet. *Exhale* They’re *Inhale.* Sending. *Exhale* A fleet.

The brother looked worried, but the champion wasn’t surprised.

Mario: They sent fleets before.

The Koopa took another deep breath.

Parakarry: Not like this. They’re sending in ships that I’ve never seen before. Like they were from outer space. The fleet had a ship different from the others. And I mean a BIG ship. It looked bigger than the city. I’ve never seen anything like it. They’re sending a full out invasion!

Luigi: We should warn them.

The city was warned of the upcoming invasion. They activated all of their defense towers, and placed battalions of Toad and Hylian soldiers at every entrance of the city, but nothing could prepare them for what they had faced. The Wrecking Crew was responsible for defending the queens of the Mushroom Kingdom and Hyrule, and protecting Professor E. Gadd as he prepared the evacuation incase they do get overwhelmed. But the champion never joined the Wrecking Crew. He stayed on the sentry tower. He was going to meet someone. An old friend.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the gusts of wind brushed against his cap, he almost felt the enemy fleet getting closer. The champion leaned against the guard rails. He waited for him. Before long, the champion heard what sounded like quiet jet thrusters. When it was close enough, he then heard a far too familiar voice.

King Bowser: Hello, plumber! Fancy seeing you here.

The champion turned around, and saw the infamous king of all Koopas sitting in his upgraded clown car with his yellow scaled arms folded across his chest.

Mario: What do you want now, Bowser?

The king raised his red tinted brow in confusion, but continued.

King Bowser: Not the response I was expecting.

Mario: Can you blame me? What else did you expect? No matter what you do. No matter how hard you try. You can’t beat me and the Wrecking Crew working together. After every attempt you made in overthrowing the Fulcrum Oligarchy, what else could you possibly do to surprise me?

The king of Koopas was genuinely surprised that Fulcrum’s champion would make such an outburst, but he then tried to suppress his deep muffled laughter.

Mario: What’s so funny?

King Bowser: I could say the same for you, plumber.

Mario: What are you talking about?

The king revealed his white fangs in a grin.

Bowser: Even after the countless times you had the chance, you never had the guts to land the killing blow. Can you not muster any intent to kill me? Or do you just keep me alive just so you can take the credit of being the world’s hero? Even though you had every chance to stop the people’s suffering. Tell me, plumber. Which of us is the sicker individual?

The champion said nothing.

King Bowser: Besides, I’m done with this never ending loop. It’s time to bring your puny little friends to an end.

Mario: I’m not afraid of you.

King Bowser: You should be.

Silence filled the top of the sentry tower aside from the subtle howl of the clown car’s thrusters and the breezing wind. It was eventually broken by the overgrown Koopa’s mouth.

King Bowser: There is a lot more to this universe other than just you and me, you know. You’ll come to realize that soon enough.

There was another long, even uncomfortable silence.

King Bowser: Well, gotta get going. I have a planet to conquer.

The champion then pulled out a .30 carbine handgun out of his holster, and aimed it at the Koopa king.

Mario: Did I say you were going anywhere?

King Bowser: Of course not. But I’m already there. But before I go, I think you should check in with your little Hylian friend.

At that moment, something in the champion convinced him to pull the trigger. As he did, a bullet came out of the barrel, and passed right through the reptilian dictator. Sparks shot out the back of his shell, and oil gushed from his chest. In seconds, the Koopa driving the clown car lost control, and crashed into the ground below the crimson soldier. He knew it wasn’t really him. Not the real Bowser. It was just a Mechakoopa. A copy of the real deal.
The champion looked down to watch the robot explode as it crashed into the surface. After remembering its words, the plumber activated his com to call out to the Hylian princess.

Mario: Zelda. What is your status on the evacuation?

The princess answered in an almost British-like accent

Zelda: We boarded everyone onto the Evacuators. The FarStar will soon show to pick you up. But Ganondorf and his men let off an ambush. We got them under control, but it almost feels like they aren’t even putting up a fight. It’s like they’re expecting something.

Mario: Thanks, Zelda.

Zelda: Do you have visualization of the fleet?

The champion looked out to the horizon. He saw Bowser’s airships and massive metallic ships looming over it. “

Mario: Yea. I’ve got visualization alright.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The champion turned his attention to the city. He saw the far off ground parted ways, and saw the fog colored triangular Evacuators escape the surface. Several decades ago, a small exploration fleet of extragalactic ships discovered regions of space that existed beyond what they called the “Unknown Regions”. After reaching Fulcrum, the fleet seemed to have powered down as it arrived. The fleet crashed, and has been reassembled by the planet’s authorities. They were repurposed for an occasion just like this, since they knew of the eventual invasion given to them by their spies and scouts. It was interesting how the downed fleet was built for and was piloted by Humans. But the champion never gave the survivors any of his undivided attention, despite being Human himself. As the Evacuators left, the champion watched as the Subspace Warship cast a massive shadow over the sentry tower. He saw the FarStar trying reach him as fast as possible. That’s when the Subspace Warship fired its main cannon.
The FarStar was luckily not the ship’s intended target. The firing of the main canon gave the Wrecking Crew’s ship the perfect cover to pick up the champion. When the main cannon fired, a straight linear line of dark purple shot out of the barrel, and cut through the buildings and ground of Kingdom City. At first, nothing happened after the shot. But it unfortunately took milliseconds of time to activate the unstable Subspace portal. Like Slipspace, Subspace is is a separate compressed dimension of space and time that grants starships the ability to rival speeds faster than light without being completely disintegrated. A Subspace portal can destroy many forms of matter. It can even recreate the matter it destroyed in the Subspace dimension if the user ever so desired. Weaponizing Subspace would be genocide, whether or not you can control it. That is exactly what The Programmer and his forces have done with the Subspace Warship. As the portal grew, everything in the portal’s vicinity was sucked in like a vacuum. Every building, monument, and evergreen in Kingdom City that was sucked into the portal was split apart. Molecule by molecule.
When the FarStar positioned itself under the top of the sentry tower, the champion activated his jump boots, and leaped off. The boots hit against the steel top of the ship with a loud echoing thud. These boots designed by Professor E. Gadd gave people the ability to jump at abnormal levels, and survive falls of height comparable to that of skyscrapers. Any and all pressure that would be applied to you is completely canceled by the jump boots. The former plumber activated one of the ship’s airlocks, and swung his body inside. The lock shut tight in an instant. The sound of compressed air echoed in the room for a brief moment. The champion walked to the bridge to meet the rest of the Wrecking Crew that was there. He looked out the main view port of the ship. He took the moments of time to contemplate their move as the FarStar flew toward the Subspace Warship at high speed.
The Oligarchy knew about the invasion before it happened. But they didn’t know that the secret weapon was a canon that could shoot unstable subspace portals, but they prepared for the weapon’s arrival. Now was the time to act. Now was to throw whoever this Programmer was off guard.

Mario: What’s the status on the evacuation?

Hylian knight: All ships have just left orbit. They’ll soon enter lightspeed, and get to the safe zone. All that’s left is us and them.

As the FarStar flew closer, the brother in green had asked.

Luigi: Did the Mechakoopa of Bowser share anything about that programmer guy?

Mario: Nothing that we don’t already know.

He then turned to the rest of the crew, and yelled out.

Mario: Is the Superstar charging our guns?

Toad soldier: Affirmative, sir! The Star has boosted our power over five hundred percent. Even if they hit us with their biggest guns, we won’t even get a scratch!

The Superstars are legendary artifacts of unknown origin that have been used as a primary source of power by the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom before and after they became part of Fulcrum’s Oligarchy. Streams of fire spewed out the thrusters as the FarStar swung itself under the hull of the warship. Free from the turbolaser range on top of the ship.

Toad Pilot: Sir! All guns are aimed at the hull!

Mario: FIRE!

Rather than completely overwhelming the ship’s systems, they fully accepted the star’s power that it offered. The main guns charged, and fired a flurry of multi-colored blaster bolts covered the bottom of the warship. The bolts cut through both shields and hull like hot knives stabbing into butter. Small explosions blossomed out of the hull after every hit that the FarStar had on the Subspace Warship. A trail of fire crossed the bottom of the weapon of destruction as the FarStar passed it, and managed to get a few shots on the engines. The Wrecking Crew finally exited Fulcrum’s atmosphere.
The FarStar’s viewport revealed the black, blue, and purple mixed vastness of space.

Mario: Pilot! Input the coordinates that E. Gadd gave us, and get us outta here!

Toad pilot: Already entering hyperspace know, sir.

The FarStar was then covered in streaks of blue, and disappeared. Out of The Programmer’s sight. For now, at least.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the bridge of the Subspace Warship, four immensely powerful beings sat in their respective chairs inside. The dark lord of the Gerudo, Ganondorf sat in one chair, while the infamous king of Koopas, Bowser sat in another. While the two tyrants sat in their seats, The Programmer sat on the tallest of the seats in the center of the bridge, while greeting the newest fourth member of his leadership. He was glad to see his Grand Autocracy growing.

The Programmer: I am glad to have you in my ranks, Julian Kintobor. With with your expertise in the mechanical arts, nothing will stand in the path of our conquest of multi galactic domination.

Dr. Eggman: It feels good to have my knowledge appreciated. But I prefer the name Doctor Robotnik.

The Programmer: Very well then, doctor. Welcome to my army.

Suddenly, an emotionless robotic soldier called out to him.

Autocracy soldier: Absolute Ruler! One of their ships has critically damaged outer hull, and escaped. Possibly even beyond repair. Should I send a ship to pursue?

The Programmer: Send the Halberd to follow them. Damage to the hull is an acceptable loss. Soon they Will be ours.

Ganondorf had decided to put his two cents on the situation. He spoke in a low gravely voice.

Ganondorf: If those feeble weaklings were able to damage a weapon as powerful as this, you may not be as formidable as you claim.

The Programmer turned his attention to the male Gerudo, and gave him a gaze that pierced his very soul.

The Programmer: Do you actually think I would waste a Subspace Warship if it was the only one at my disposal? I have others. Losing one of many is an acceptable loss.

Ganondorf: Underestimating our enemies might become a mistake.

The Programmer chuckled to that.

The Programmer: I must say that it’s rich hearing such a thing from you, Ganondorf.

The Gerudo’s face began to grimace.

The Programmer: You likely wouldn’t have even taken over Kingdom City if it wasn’t for me. Now we can recreate it in our own image!

Dr. Eggman: What will we do now?

The Programmer: I’ve waited too long to only occupy just one planet. Now we expand.

---------In another place in time -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Their second mission reached it’s conclusion quickly, and efficiently. The intended targets were stopped, but not killed. The group had immobilized the optimistic group, but the leader was ordered to personally execute the most dangerous of all the targets. The leader had aimed his blaster at the target. The Human bounty hunter has killed many. But he didn’t believe that the victim deserved a brutal execution. The hunter saw much of himself in the Cornerian’s eyes. He put up a good fight, but was severely beaten, and was sprawled on the floor. He ever so wanted to look away and just fire. But it became so much harder the longer he looked.

Fox McCloud: I guess this is how I end. Just like my father.

Jason Urn: Not today.

In an instant, the Cornerian winced, the hunter fixated his aim upward toward himself, and fired.
The Cornerian slowly opened his eyes, and saw a scorched hole in the ceiling of the his ship. He then turned his eyes to the Human hunter. He was aiming his weapon upward, fell to his knees, and dropped it. Exhaustion was starting to weigh down on the Human. But he didn’t let it expose him. Doing so would’ve given the Cornerian the perfect window to throw another blow. That is if he got up.

Addison Zeph: Boss? What are you doing?

Jason Urn: Letting him live.

The Marauders seeing their leader spare someone was very rare. If he spared them, you really should do the same. It was quite the spectacle. Jason Urn had spared Fox Mccloud. Still on his knees, the Human had spoken again to the beaten Cornerian.

Jason Urn: I am very sorry for almost killing you, mercenary. I was almost going to take the bounty, but you’re not worth that much. I’ll understand if you won’t forgive me. But I hope we can become friends one day.

The beaten Cornerian smiled. He tried to mouth “Thank you.”, but he made no sound. He then fell unconscious.
The bounty hunter looked to his men.

Jason Urn: Let them go.

The Marauders took away their embrace on the Star Fox team, and they rushed toward their leader. The mercenaries looked at Fox in horror. They forgot that Jason was even there. Except for one member. Nora Leslie. A female Cornerian that was the leader of a second mercenary group named Crimson Fox before it became part of the more well known group. As the team grouped around their leader, the red female Cornerian threw the Human hunter a look that he won’t ever forget. A look of disdain. A look of revenge. Jason was not intimidated at all by Nora’s glare, but it was a look that won’t ever be forgotten. The Human hunter had then turned to face the rest of his men.

Jason Urn: Gather your things, boys. We’re leaving.

Suddenly, a strangely familiar voice cut through the speakers of the Great Fox.

Mysterious voice: And to think that I had high hopes for you.

The voice echoed throughout the metal halls. An erie beeping sound began emanating from a device on Addison’s wrist.

Addison Zeph: Boss! A fleet of unknown ships is coming out of hyperspace!

In seconds, a fleet of ships once used by the former Separatist Alliance appeared before the infiltrated Great Fox. a Predator Cruiser, a Descent Dreadnaught, a Munificent War Frigate, a Ubrikkian Custom Destroyer, a Recusant Destroyer, a Providence Carrier, and a Lucrehulk Battleship. The voice sounded like Knell the Butcher, but something about it sounded different. It almost sounded synthetic in a way. It had concluded with the following.

Knell the Butcher: You were given an order. You disobeyed it. Now you must endure the consequences. This is where you end. Goodbye.

Those were the voice’s last words before it’s fleet had opened fire on the ship that held the mercenaries. Jason Urn looked to his men, and yelled.

Jason Urn: Marauders! Get the these Cornerians in the medical bay! We’re leaving!
